At the End of Your Resources

"Simon, Simon, behold, Satan demanded to have you, that he might sift you like wheat." (Luke 22:31)

Prayer starts at the end of your resources. Not on the clock, but in the heart. You can say words at any hour of the day, but the thing Scripture calls prayer, the thing that actually bends a life, tends to begin at the exact moment a person runs out of options. For most of us, prayer only becomes natural once every gift and every strength we have is spent.

That should tell us something uncomfortable about self-sufficiency. It is not neutral. It is not simply a strength that happens to sit off to the side, unrelated to our faith. It is the specific thing standing between us and our knees. The reason a capable person does not pray in the morning is not that he forgot. It is that he still believes he can handle the day himself, and a man who can handle it does not call for help.

And here is the terrible mercy in that. Sooner or later you will meet something you cannot handle. A diagnosis, a child, a grief, a failure with no workaround. And in that place, with your competence finally exhausted, you will pray, really pray, perhaps for the first time in months. So do not wait to be broken into prayer. Come now, at the height of your strength, and hand it over before it is torn from you, because the knees you can reach willingly today are the same knees loss will drive you to tomorrow.
